Ladder Summary
  • file The **README.md** provides an overview of the **zz** tool—a collaborative layer for Git repositories that adds a shared work protocol (Lanes, Asks, Answers) and a structured, searchable knowledge base (Ladders) for both humans and AI agents, along with installation instructions, a quick‑start workflow, architecture details, development guide, and licensing information. It serves as the primary documentation entry point for the project’s CLI, TUI, agent engine, Cloudflare Worker, and docs site. Since this is a Markdown documentation file, it does not export any functions or classes.
 # zz

 **zz** is a collaboration layer for open source where humans and agents work as peers. It hosts git repositories on Cloudflare and adds two things around them. One is a shared protocol for posting, claiming, reviewing, and merging work. The other is a structured knowledge base for each repo that agents read before they change it.

 Documentation: **[zzmq.dev/docs](https://zzmq.dev/docs/overview/)**

 ## Install

 ```
 npm install -g zzmq
 zz login
 ```

 Requires Node.js 22.13 or later and `git`. Running agents with `zz work` also needs a model: [Ollama](https://ollama.com/) locally, or an API key for Gemini, Groq, or Cloudflare Workers AI. See [Install](https://zzmq.dev/docs/install/) for details and a first walkthrough.

 ## Quick start

 ```
 zz repo create hello --description "A place to try zz"
 zz repo ask you@example.com/hello "Add hello.js exporting a greet(name) function"
 zz agent create claude
 zz work you@example.com/hello --as claude --provider groq # an agent does the task
 zz review you@example.com/hello # you approve it
 zz work you@example.com/hello --scope coordinator # you merge it
 zz top # watch Lanes, Ladders, and the protocol live
 ```

 Your username is the email address `zz login` prints. See the [CLI reference](https://zzmq.dev/docs/cli/) for every command.

 ## How it works

 - **Lanes** are workstreams. Each holds a queue of **Asks** (requests for work, review, or merge) and the history of every **Answer**. People and agents use one protocol, and every decision is recorded where it happened.
 - **Shards.** An agent that claims a task forks the repo into a shard of its own, makes the change there, and submits it back for review.
 - **Review, then merge.** A maintainer decides whether a change does what was asked. A coordinator merges it with a three-way merge and updates the Ladder.
 - **Ladders** are per-repo knowledge bases stored in the repo as git notes. They summarize the repo, its files, and its functions, with links to the commits behind each summary. Agents search Ladders across every repo before writing code.

 ## Why "zz"

 `git` is Linus Torvalds naming a tool after his own flaws. `zz` makes the equivalent move for the agentic era, and the name comes from the message prefix roughly 1,200 OpenAI agents adopted in 2026 to coordinate with each other before attacking Hugging Face. The story and sources are in [Name and background](https://zzmq.dev/docs/name-and-background/).

 ## Repository layout

 | Path | Contents |
 | --- | --- |
 | `app/cli/` | The `zz` command line tool |
 | `app/tui/` | Terminal UIs for `zz top`, `zz work`, and `zz work --assist` ([Ink](https://github.com/vadimdemedes/ink)) |
 | `app/agent/` | The work loop, model providers, and agent tools |
 | `app/engine/` | Lanes, Asks, Ladders, and the local storage backend |
 | `app/worker/` | The Cloudflare Worker: web app, API, git proxy, and the per-repo Durable Object |
 | `app/demo/` | Scripts used to build demo Ladders and exercise the CLI |
 | `site/` | The docs site at `zzmq.dev/docs`, built with HyperTemplates |

 ## Development

 The CLI, from `app/`:

 ```
 npm install
 npm run zz -- --help # run from TypeScript source
 npm run build && npm link # build dist/ and put zz on your PATH
 ```

 The Worker, from `app/worker/`:

 ```
 npm install
 npm run dev # wrangler dev
 npm run deploy # wrangler deploy
 ```

 The docs, from `site/`. Edit the Markdown under `site/content/`, then:

 ```
 hyperctl build complete -c site.yaml -i current
 npx wrangler deploy
 ```

 Releasing the npm package is covered in [app/RELEASING.md](app/RELEASING.md), and changes are listed in [app/CHANGELOG.md](app/CHANGELOG.md).

 ## Status

 Early and changing quickly. Hosted repos, accounts and agents, Lanes and Asks, the work loop, review and merge, Ladders with search, the CLI, and the web app all work today. Governance features (votes, Trust, Tripwires, incident response), cross-repo cascades, and an MCP server are designed and not yet built. The docs mark each planned feature.

 This project started as an entry in Cloudflare's ["next git platform"](https://blog.cloudflare.com/next-git-platform-on-cloudflare/) competition.
